The simple things (Friday Fictioneers)

Image by Sarah Potter at http://www.sarahpotterwrites.com

Lookingforlove78 enjoyed snuggling in front of the fire with a bottle of red on a snowy winter’s evening. She said she was more of a beach person. Then he preferred long walks on the sand.

Chat$with$me had a BMW, a penthouse apartment and five Armani suits. She said money didn’t matter. He said he liked the simple things in life.

Hotstuff69 sent a photo that made her drop her phone in the sink.

Then there was Alex. Couldn’t stand wet sand. Rented a basic studio. Lol’d when autocorrect changed ‘duck’ into… well.

He was the one she agreed to meet.

Nothing good (Friday Fictioneers)

‘There’s nothing good about the cold. Nothing!’

Eloise scowled at the snow outside.

Jay picked up his jacket. ‘Well, I’m getting dinner.’

‘I’m a beach girl. Hot sand. Hot sun. Sunburn. Soothing Aloe Vera…’

He shrugged. ‘Stay here if you like.’

‘Is that a threat?’

‘I honestly don’t care.’

The chill outside hit them hard as they staggered across the icy road. Large snowflakes fell around them and Jay noticed how some settled softly in Eloise’s hair. Without thinking, he put his arm around her shoulders and held her close. She pushed her face into his warm chest and smiled.

I have exciting news to share that some of you lovely fellow FFs have been asking about. I received a Highly Commended in the Newcastle Herald Short Story competition for my story Bloodstained. Four stories were chosen out of over a hundred entries, so I’m pretty thrilled to be selected. The prize is 10 new books, a weekend pass to the Newcastle Writers Festival (hurrah!) and a Herald subscription. A dear friend from my writers group Diana Threlfo also made it to the Highly Commended list – check out her beautiful short story Unconstrained.

Young love (Friday Fictioneers)

Young love is an extraordinary thing.

She held the picnic basket, full of fresh-baked bread just for him. He carried two pieces of cardboard.

It was her favourite spot. It was his first time.

They sat on one piece each at the top of the grassy slope.

‘Johnny, the picnic spot’s just at that first rock. So don’t go sliding all the way down the-’

They probably should’ve discussed it earlier.

By the time Johnny made it back up he was sweaty, red-faced and significantly less attractive. She noticed her bread had gone stale.

Young love is an extraordinary thing.

6. The Time Traveler’s Wife – Audrey Niffenegger (100 book challenge)

Audrey Niffenegger is a genius. The impact of time-traveling on love is such a clever idea. The issues the main characters deal with in their relationship are common (love, lust, guilt, desire, pain) but the reason for the issues is so unique (Clare’s husband keeps disappearing unexpectedly because he’s a time traveller).

This is the 6th book of my 100 book challenge and while I was reading it I felt like shouting from the rooftop that everyone should read this book. Sure, the ending was a bit disappointing. But I’ll get to that.

Time travel is so confusing!

Time travel is so confusing!

I’m the worst audience when it comes to stories about time travel. I always manage to get myself confused. In fact, the characters themselves don’t even have to time travel: a simple flashback in the story and I’m lost.

Wax on. Wax off. (Friday Fictioneers)

image

She let it burn. And it melted. And spilled over onto the floor.

‘Shit, Janet! Look what you did.’

I crouched down to catch the dripping wax. While my fingers burned, she rolled her eyes.

‘Lighten up.’

And that was all she said.

It wasn’t the first time she’d said that. But it would be the last.

The wax would dry hard into the rug. The cabinet would be marked forever. The scar across my knuckles: visible until the day I died.

Before she left, she pouted her lips and blew out the candle, leaving me alone in the dark.

The darkness above the lights (Friday Fictioneers)

Hidden in the darkness above the lights and perched on a dusty beam he watches her perform. She throws her body across the wooden floor: the passion, the pain, the sorrow of lost love.
Next to him sits a little grey mouse.
They wait for the audience to leave.
Then, the mouse scurries along the beam and hops to the floor, hoping to find something to eat.
He swings down too, hoping to catch her before she leaves. Hoping to tell her how he feels.
Hoping to find dropped food.
Hoping to find lost love.
But they find neither.

Starting the climb (Friday Fictioneers)

‘Hurry, scurry!’ she says impatiently.

Her toes grip either side of the trunk and she pulls up onto the next branch.

She’ll say that to me one hundred and fifty-three times. As we ride our bikes along the pier in the rain, as I clamber through her window on a warm Tuesday night, as I leaf through the menu at La Petite Castille, as I muddle my words down on one shaky knee, as I work out the meaning of two lines versus one.

‘Hurry, scurry!’

But for now, she simply wants me to climb the tree.
