Proud parents (Friday Fictioneers)

His parents knew the importance of providing their only child with a creative outlet. They filled his playroom with a drum kit, a guitar, an oboe and a double bass.

The first time he picked up the drumsticks his parents watched with keen interest.

A ray of sunshine hit the brass cymbals and reflected a distorted image of the room around him: the guitar, the oboe, the double bass and his parents’ beaming faces.

He lowered his drumsticks and turned to his parents.

He knew he needed to capture that moment.

‘Mum, Dad, I want to be a painter.’

  1. Dear Jessie,

I laughed out loud. There’s an old Yiddish saying, “People make plans, God laughs.” At least these parents gave him opportunities. 😉

BTW, the music room in the photo belongs to my eldest son. It was our bedroom when we stayed with him this summer. This is only one small corner of it.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  2. The best laid plans of mice and men ….
    AnElephant chortles.
    Nicely written.

  3. I have to give a great chuckle on this one. I wonder if you will ever find your perfect vocation. (Your writing is gaining momentum, though) Lots of love, Dad

    ha ha, nicely done.

This reminded me of the time I asked mum and dad for a cello. Didn’t last long.

  6. Ha, yes sometimes the best-lines plans find other outlets.. I hope painting will work out.

Seems like were were in a similar mindset this week. As long as we’re being creative, it’s all good! 🙂 Loved your story.

And then they’ll get him an easel and paints, and he’ll want to be an actor. Sigh…

Lol. Have to admit my response would be…’at least give music a chance !’

  11. Hah! I laughed at this one. Very good.

  12. Ha! Ha! That’s SO funny. Well done!

  13. Of course he does . . .

    Cheers!

  14. Yep–That’s how it works. Well done!!

  15. Good take on the prompt. My favorite line is the last.

  16. Dear Jessie – How absolutely perfect! What a good story. Thanks, Nan 🙂

  17. J

Sounds like my kid — had to laugh!

  18. And all it took was a flash of light on a shiny cymbal. Mum and Dad could have saved themselves a fortune. Great story.

  19. Well written Jessie, with humour (or despair) that all parents can relate to!

  20. Alas, we can only provide the canvas… our kids have their own destinies to fulfill. Nice story, Jess.

At least she still pressed for the Fine Arts! Very good one!

    Greetings from Greece!

  22. I like that unexpected twist. If he takes inspiration from even that, he is probably a born artist.

  23. Let’s hope his parents sold all the musical stuff and bought paints!

  24. That was a fun twist there. 🙂

  25. And, doesn’t something like this happen to parents? It happened to mine! Please consider joining in on Mondays Finish the Story! 🙂

  26. Hahaha! The best laid plans mice and men. Well, not really. If he had not seen the image from playing the drums, there would have been no artist.
    Good job!

  27. This is what parents do though. We try to open our children to all the possibilities so that they can find their true calling. I’d say this is successful parenting!

  28. Well done, nice with the ray of sunshine triggering him to wanting to be a painter! Loving it ! v
